7. Edit the images

This is the only technical step. None of the other websites explained this very well. You will need either Adobe Photoshop or some other program (there are free opensource alternatives, listed in the references at the bottom of this page) that can manipulate images.  You are going to need to do the following:

  •  crop the images
  • scale the images (in Photoshop that is called changing the image size and/or canvas size)
  • print the images on a color printer as "tiles". This means taking an image that is larger than a single piece of paper and printing the entire image across multiple pages, so you can cut and paste them together to make the single image.

Here's how I did it.

  1. Import the image into Photoshop
  2. Crop the image to just one side of the figure (like the face, left side of head, top of head, front of body, etc.)
  3. Save the image as a new file with a descriptive name, like "Steveface" or "Stevebodyfront".
  4. Then on the top menu bar, select
Image -> Image size -> Document size.
Change the document size to the dimensions of the surface you are working on. If you chose your boxes to be the approximately correct dimensions, then aspect ratio won't change much, and variations won't be noticable.  If you are one of those annoying perfectionists, sure, you can make your own boxes from fresh cardboard and make them make the aspect ratio of the actual images.  But I think it would probably be cheaper, easier and less time consuming for you to simply undergo therapy for your OCD disorder instead. :)
  5. Now save the images as PDF files (Acrobat, which is FREE will be able to print the images as tiles)
